BREAKING NEWS :  The official start of the whale watching season is this Thursday, 15 January, and as a new way of welcoming back these huge visitors, five buoys have been installed to record the whales’ sounds or « songs » , in order to determine the type and number of species that visit Dominican waters.

According to Hoy newspaper, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarena) and six organizations signed the traditional memorandum of understanding that establishes the rules for whale watching in a clear and precise manner.

Minister Jaime David Fernandez Mirabal told reporters that he would act with the full weight of the law against any illegal boat that enters the Marine Mammal Sanctuary, located in the northeast of the Dominican Republic.

According to Osvaldo Vasquez of Environmental Consulting and Maritime Techniques, the sanctuary is visited by as many as 14,000 whales each year.

Some whales will be monitored with satellite tracking systems inserted by darts.

BREAKING NEWS: The Tourist Police of the Dominican Republic, announced the realization of the « Seminar of Preventive Tourist Security » addressed to the members and to the departmental representatives of the institution, in order to offer a better service to the tourists who visit the country.

The courses will be given by professors Charles Ortiz, Robert González, Frank Pérez and Dimas Cortez, from the criminology universities John Jay and Monroe College, in the United States.

The purpose of this Seminar is to improve the security and orientation tasks dedicated to the tourists and the Dominicans who move between the various tourist areas of the country, as to seek to maintain a proximity among the citizens who coexist with the tourist in zones like Juan Dolio, Samaná, Las Terrenas and Las Galeras, in the East and the North-East areas of the country.

The subjects which will be covered by the professionals are: preventive security, criminal behaviors, daily arrests and procedures, reports, courtesy, professionalism and respect for the contravener and the tourist.

According to the information offered by the Tourist Police, the instructors who will give the courses received a great academic training in universities of the United States and have experience in the preventive security.
